Presenting the all new Ibanez TOD10N Tim Henson Signature Nylon String, this one in their Transparent Black Flat (TKF) finish.
As an artist, Polyphia's Tim Henson is always trying to update, invigorate and reinvent his band’s image. He has taken that same approach with the TOD10N, his signature nylon string electric guitar. The TOD’s most striking aesthetic feature may be the fingerboard inlay design, which Tim has dubbed as the “Tree of Death”. The name and the design are both nods to the iconic Ibanez “Tree of Life” inlay design, but with a twist.
This specialized acoustic/electric immediately drew interest and attention when it appeared on Tim’s social media channels and Polyphia’s music video for their song, Playing God.
Tim’s inspiration for this guitar came from a previous Ibanez design called the SC500N. This older model was unique in that it was a solid body electric, but it utilized nylon strings paired with a Piezo pickup system. While the TOD10N certainly drew inspiration from that model, the specifications are quite different and it’s very much its own creation.
The body shape is based on the FR series but is hollow in its construction. The design also incorporates a discrete sound hole located on the upper bout, directed towards the player. This preserves the clean, modern appearance of the guitar, while also providing clear and accurate acoustic tone. Fan Bracing is another critical element of the TOD10N. A bracing style generally found on classical guitars, it was incorporated to help facilitate and enhance the “Nuevo Flamenco” style Tim and Polyphia have been exploring as of late.
Some of the features of the TOD10N at a glance:
- A Walnut fretboard features a well-balanced tonal character from low to high end.
- The Solid Sitka Spruce top provides an enormous frequency range that offers wave after wave of shimmering highs along with tight mids and a full-bodied low end.
- Sapele back and sides offer a full-bodied and warm mid-range and a bright tone.
- The Fishman® Sonicore pickup accurately translates a full guitar sound to whatever amplification system you plug into. The Ibanez AEQ210TF preamp provides the extra punch of on-board EQ, and the convenience of an easy-to-read digital tuner.
- The Walnut bridge transfers string vibration directly to the body, delivering a natural and warm tone.
- Modified FR hollow body w/ Fan bracing. Its thin, compact body and superior high fret access contribute to the superb playability of this guitar. It has less feedback as there’s no sound hole on the body top. Fan bracing, which is commonly used for classical guitars, allows this guitar to have a warm and natural nylon string sound.
- The combination of a narrow 46mm width nut and 400R fretboard radius offers easy fingering.
- Side Sound Port: The sound port on the body side allows you to feel and hear the pure acoustic tone of this guitar more clearly and directly.
- "Tree of Death" fingerboard Inlay: The name and the design of this fingerboard inlay are both nods to the iconic Ibanez "Tree of Life" inlay design, but with a twist.
